As a dedicated wild bird hunter, I was always looking for that perfect fit for me. I have owned
German Shorthaired Pointers, Pudel Pointers, Braque Francais, and German Wirehaired
Pointers. All are great dogs. For me, living in the heat of Arizona, I needed a dog that could
handle the excessive heat, find birds, and not shed too much in the house the rest of the year.
Yes, they shed but not near as much as my German Shorthair. Oh, and they had to be good
house pets since they all live indoors.
I stumbled upon the Braque Francais breed by accident. A friend of mine purchased a pup that
he couldn’t keep, and we took him in as a foster until we could rehome him. My family fell in
love with him and I decided to see if he could actually hunt. At 11 weeks old he was holding
point for over a minute on scent not sight. That was all it took for me to know I had something
special in his nose. Jack has been a wild bird finding machine ever since. He handles the heat
better than all my other dogs as well. He was so impressive I decided to buy a female from
Unique Gundogs. Rue stepped right in with Jack and has been outstanding on our wild quail
here in Arizona. She is a smaller dog at 35 lbs but she is all business in the field and is a lap
dog in the house. My only knock on both dogs is they work a little closer than I wanted at the
time. They are the perfect foot hunting dog though. Close to mid-range from 40-100 yards and
constantly checking in. If you like to see dog work up close you can’t go wrong with a Braque
Francais.
I’ve had friends that are German Wirehaired breeders for a while. They are Western Chukar
dogs and have big engines. They can really get out there and hunt the hills. I wanted a dog
that would stretch out a bit farther. I was lucky enough to get a super star female from Ghost
Point Wirehairs. Look up Eric Forrester on YouTube and you will see my Peppers littermates
Savvy and Riggs tearing it up on wild birds across the country. That is in addition to Pepper
tearing it up on my own YouTube channel AZ Quail Adventures. I’m very excited to watch
Pepper continue to develop and see her pups when they come in the Spring of 2025 (anticipated).
